I turned the corner. Thank you all so much for sharing your experiences and suggestions - I ended up combining bits from several ideas and all of them helped in their different ways. I also tried drawing things I don't usually, working once in pencil, then inking later and once over a prepared background of random splashes and splatters which is something I'd like to do again - I have done this in the past, but not for a long long time.
